A Bridgeport man living in a halfway house has been receiving an outpouring of support after he skipped a job interview to help save a stranger who was seriously hurt in a car crash.
Aaron Tucker had only been out of prison for a week when he landed a possible work opportunity last Wednesday.
"I was on my way to a job interview at Dinosaur Barbecue in Stamford, Connecticut. I had to take the bus from the bus terminal in Bridgeport," he told News 12
It was on that ride he saw a car hit a tree and land on its roof in Westport.
Tucker says he thought the bus driver was going to stop and help.
"He said, 'No, I got a job to do. I'm going to keep going.'"
He says the driver warned Tucker that if he got out, he was going to leave.
That didn't stop Tucker. He jumped off the bus and ran to the car, which was smoking. Workers at a local auto body shop also came over to help pull out the driver.
"He had a whole gash in his head, so I took my shirt off and placed it on his head to slow down the bleeding," says Tucker.
Tucker skipped his job interview and stayed with the man until an ambulance arrived.
"When you see someone in trouble, you're supposed to help," he says.
As word spread of Tucker's selfless actions, the Westport community rallied around him. A GoFundMe page had raised more than $27,000 as of Saturday afternoon. Tucker says he's had job offers roll in as well. He calls the whole experience overwhelming and humbling.
"Everyone's talking about giving me a second chance and I appreciate everyone who's doing what they can for me right now. That's amazing," says Tucker.
Tucker says any money he gets will go towards taking care of his 21-month-old son. Tucker was arrested a few weeks before Aaron Jr. was born and says his son is what keeps him motivated.
