A teen who admitted to stabbing and killing a Stamford man over a spilled cup of coffee received a sentence of 20 years in prison, the maximum allowed, on Tuesday.

Marquest Hall, 17, initially faced a murder charge in connection with the 2015 attack outside a McDonald's on Bedford Street in Stamford. He agreed to plead guilty to the reduced charge of intentional manslaughter.

The judge had said he would reluctantly accept the plea deal after prosecutors explained they offered it due to Hall's age and learning disabilities.

Hall was 15 at the time, but prosecutors charged him as an adult.

As News 12 Connecticut has reported, police said Antonio Muralles, 52, bumped into Hall and his co-defendant, James McLamb, and possibly spilled coffee on them before the deadly altercation.

Hall then stabbed Muralles several times.

In court during sentencing, the prosecutor said that if Hall appears before a parole board, it should be denied. He says he's not sure Hall feels any remorse.

Hall's attorney described his client as a young man who has matured and realized what he's done.

A spokesperson for Muralles' family read a statement on their behalf in court.

"We could describe the pain we feel, how empty we are without him," they said. "We could give you a million reasons why he didn't deserve to die this way, but the truth is no one deserves to die over coffee."
