Officials fight to halt Norwalk woman's deportation

NORWALK -

Lawyers are fighting for a Norwalk woman who has to leave her family and be deported back to her home country of Guatemala.

At a hearing Tuesday in Hartford, Nury Chavarria was told by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, that she has to leave the country Thursday.

Chavarria, 43, has been living in the United States for 24 years and has raised four children.

Chavarria was denied asylum when she came to the United States but stayed. She has been checking in yearly with immigration since 2011.

At last month's check-in, she was told by ICE to leave the country in five weeks. She has been wearing a monitoring bracelet ever since.

Now, her appeal to stay and care for her children has been denied. ICE officials say because of government regulations in place since Sept. 11, 2001, her time has run out.

Chavarria is expected to leave Newark Liberty International Airport Thursday at 5 p.m. unless there is a last-minute change from ICE officials.

Connecticut Sens. Blumenthal and Murphy have also been fighting to keep her in the country.
