Ex-teacher pleads not guilty in sex assault of special-education student

BRIDGEPORT -

A former Central High School teacher charged with sexually assaulting a special-education student appeared in court Tuesday.

Laura Ramos, 31, pleaded not guilty. She had no comment as she left the courthouse.

As News 12 reported, Ramos, of Milford, was arrested last month on the same day that the high school held its graduation ceremony.

She resigned after being placed on administrative leave.

According to court documents, Ramos says the relationship with the victim "started with flirting and progressed into sexual intercourse."

Ramos says she had the victim listed in her phone under "Bro," and she began bringing him "homemade sandwiches and fruit from her home."

Court records also show a witness told detectives Ramos asked him "to buy, find and roll marijuana for her."

Outside the courthouse, Ramos' attorney, Edward Gavin, said earlier that he's waiting to receive those documents from the state, as the case is in its early stages.

"I recognize that this is a high-profile case," says Gavin. "Laura is presumed innocent, and that's the posture that we're taking, and are looking forward to seeing what the state's claim is and the substance in those claims."

Ramos is due back in court next month.
