Man sentenced to 60 years for taxi driver's murder

STAMFORD -

The Stamford man who stabbed a taxi driver 127 times in 2014 received the maximum of 60 years in prison at his sentencing Tuesday.

Shota Mekoshvili, 32, was convicted of murder in the August 2014 slaying of Mahomed Kamal, 47, in a quiet neighborhood after a cab ride.

Mekoshvili claimed self-defense and testified during the trial that Kamal drove him onto a street off Long Ridge Road and tried to have sex with him.

Prosecutors said it was an attempted robbery that led to a deadly struggle.

During the sentencing hearing, Kamal's widow asked the judge to hand down the maximum sentence. She said it would help serve justice, but the pain of losing her husband and her son's father would remain.
