The Bridgeport Police Department displayed today for the first time new crime scene barriers officers will use to shield dead bodies from public view.
Controversy erupted back in May when video went viral showing the body of 15-year-old Jayson Negron, who had been shot by police after a chase. Police Chief AJ Perez says the incident prompted him to seek out the barriers.
The purpose is to preserve the dignity of the person who has died and protect the deceased's family from seeing their loved one on television, police say.
"We heard our public and the outcry was we needed to provide better dignity to our crime victims," says Capt. Roderick Porter, of the Bridgeport Police Department.
News 12 Connecticut spoke with Negron's sister today, and she says getting the barriers is a triumph for her family. The family pushed for some kind of device to fill the purpose in a private meeting with Chief Perez weeks after the incident.
But the sister, Jazmerie Melendez, says there's also a downside to having the crime scene curtains.
"These shields bring up this idea that we don't trust the police department, and we don't know what's going to happen once those shields go up," Melendez says.
Police hope to order the barriers and have them in use within a couple of months.
