NORWALK -

The Norwalk mother of four who took sanctuary in a New Haven church to avoid deportation returned home after a judge granted her a temporary stay.

Nury Chavarria spent almost a week at the Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal church. During that time, she made national headlines for her last-minute detour from the airport, where she was scheduled to fly to her native Guatemala.

After returning to her Norwalk home, she told News 12 that she's happy to have reunited with her family and been able to return to work.

She also had the backing of a number of high-profile politicians, including Gov. Dannel Malloy, who visited her the day she took sanctuary.

As News 12 previously reported, Chavarria has lived in the United States for 24 years. She was denied asylum when she arrived and ignored immigration officials who requested she leave voluntarily. She's been checking in with immigration authorities annually since 2011, but this year they told her she had to leave.
