A police chase in Bridgeport ended with one person dead and two others hospitalized in critical condition Thursday, authorities say, after a fleeing suspect lost control of his car and slammed into another vehicle.
Police say they arrested the driver down the street.
Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez says a car fleeing police officers veered out of control and hit another car on Iranistan Avenue near the corner of Railroad Avenue.
State police say a trooper had been pursuing the black Infiniti on Interstate 95 before it turned into the city.
Police say the crash killed an elderly woman driving a blue Toyota. Neighbors identified her only as Suzanne. They say she lived in the area for about a year.
"She was a very good neighbor," says Minnie Pearl Green. "It's just sad."
Nelly Rosado, who witnessed the crash, agrees.
"It was sad, because it could have been my, my niece and my son," she says.
Two other victims on bicycles were struck and later taken to Bridgeport Hospital.
After the crash, investigators say the fleeing driver ran to Black Rock Avenue, where police K-9 units captured him. Police say they also found drugs in the suspect's car.
City and state police both responded to the scene of the crash. Bridgeport police say they are investigating the accident because it involved state police. They did not immediately identify the suspect.
