A group of local Venezuelans gathered at Greenwich Town Hall Thursday as political violence and economic crisis continues in Venezuela.

The group says it has been campaigning across western Connecticut since June hoping to get as many signatures as possible to send to the international criminal court in the Netherlands to help its home country. Group members say they are hoping the court will launch a formal investigation into the torture they say is going on in the country.

The Treasury Department imposed financial sanctions on past and present Venezuelan officials two weeks ago, blocking their assets in the United States.

Rosanna Mini, of Greenwich, says she has lived in the U.S. for 15 years, but still has family members back home in Venezuela. She says it's painful knowing the economy is failing and that people are dying in hospitals because there's not enough medicine.

Mini says people of all ages are being tortured just because they don't agree with the president's policies.

The group says it has around 3,000 signatures and will be organizing the signatures on Sunday before sending them to the Netherlands.
