Red Cross: Cash donations best way to help Houston

A Red Cross spokeswoman says the best way Connecticut residents can help flood survivors in Houston is to donate money.

Stefanie Arcangelo says it's not yet clear if the crisis will create a spike in the demand for donated blood. But she says that donating blood is always helpful since it has a limited shelf-life.

People from around the country have been waiting for news from loved ones in Houston after a storm brought massive flooding to the region.

Even Connecticut's Red Cross sent help to Texas, where floodwaters displaced about 30,000 people -- many of whom may not have been able to get in contact with relatives and let them know they're OK.

Kerie Boshka says she's been in contact with friends and relatives in her home state of Texas -- but her main concern was her 22-year-old nephew who attends law school in Houston. She says she heard from him Monday that his apartment was safe from the flooding.

But she's also seen tragedy unfold for other people while monitoring social media.

"The one that's the most heartbreaking is the nursing home," she says, referring to images of flooding inside a care facility. "Elderly people sitting in chairs, covered in water. They had to be evacuated."
