New Canaan vigil remembers those lost to drug overdoses

Posted: Updated:
NEW CANAAN -

Hundreds of people turned out at vigils throughout western Connecticut to remember people lost to drug overdoses.

An estimated 600 people turned out for an event in New Canaan called "Helping Each Other to Heal.”

According to organizers, the purpose of the rallies is to not only honor the poeple who died too soon, but also bring the community together in the fight against addiction.

Before the rally, volunteers showed people how to use the overdose reversing medication, Narcan.

Experts say it's important for people to know how to use the medication because it could save a loved one's life.

“It's a very scary thing that they know it anytime that they could get a bad batch or too much or that fentanyl could be involved, which is very deadly,” says Ellen Erezovsky with Silver Hill Hospital. “So I think it's just terrifying for family and friends to think that this happens to someone they love.”

People can get Narcan at their local pharmacy, but the cost varies, so make sure to shop around.
