Bridgeport PD: 3 hurt, 1 seriously, in crash near school

BRIDGEPORT -

A car accident near a Bridgeport school has left a crossing guard in critical condition after he and a co-worker were hit by a car Tuesday morning, police say.

The driver, 47-year-old Larissa Fountain, dropped off her daughter moments before blacking out at the wheel around 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of Park and North avenues, according to Av Harris, a city spokesperson.

Police say Fountain’s car jumped the curb and slammed into both crossing guards, one male and one female, and dragged them for about 40 feet.

The crash broke both of the male crossing guard's legs and caused brain bleeding, according to officials. They identified him as Leonard Hunter, 68, and say he took the "full brunt" of the impact.

"It's mind-boggling to know someone you know to get hit by a car like that, especially a humble good guy like him," says Curtis Baldwin Jr. Hunter was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital for emergency surgery.

Harris says the female guard, Idalen Vargas, 50, was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.

Fountain was taken to Bridgeport Hospital.
