Bridgeport PD asks for unity after confrontation with mourners

BRIDGEPORT -

People who showed up to a makeshift memorial to 19-year-old Eric Diaz, Bridgeport's 20th homicide victim this year, say they were expecting a somber vigil – but instead they were greeted by something different.

A News 12 viewer video shows some of the tense moments between police and the public Friday night. Authorities say two officers were pepper sprayed during a confrontation. They were treated at the scene.

"Emotions were running high," said Edwin Diaz, the victim's uncle.

By noon on Friday, the memorial to Diaz had taken over the sidewalk where Diaz collapsed to the ground after being shot in the stomach by an unknown gunman.

Police Chief AJ Perez says the same department that was the target for mourners' anger Friday night now has the task of solving this murder.

"You can rest assured that our detectives are on the case," says Perez.

The police chief asked for the community to come together and work with his detectives, so the person who killed Diaz can be held accountable. The victim's family says they will put aside their anger to make sure that goal can be accomplished.

The family of Eric Diaz has set up a fund to help pay for his funeral.
