Officials making sure residents prepared ahead of Jose

Posted: Updated:
WESTPORT -

While coastal communities in western Connecticut are preparing for any effects of Jose, officials want to make sure you are prepared too.

According to officials, coastal flooding is a concern because of Jose, and also because tides are already expected to be higher than usual.

The police department says patrols will be closely monitoring water levels.

Several cities and towns in the area have been busy preparing ahead of Jose.

In Fairfield, Emergency Management says each department in town has extra crews on standby should there be significant coastal flooding and power outages.

Officials say crews have been clearing storm catch basins and securing parks and beaches so that nothing flies away.

“With every storm that is forecast, we prepare our equipment, our personnel, all of the departments participate,” says Chief Denis McCarthy. “We have a 96-hour plan, do a little bit each day in anticipation of a hurricane landfall.”

Wind is also a concern in several other communities.

The safest place during high winds is always indoors, so postpone any outdoor activities.

Officials advise to make sure your windows are closed securely and to bring in any patio furniture, lawn decorations and garbage cans.

If you have to be outside, watch for flying debris, and avoid anything being touched by downed power lines, including cars and tree branches.

In Westport, officials are encouraging people in low-lying areas to move their cars to higher ground.
