Officials: At least 6 dead in Puerto Rico in Hurricane Maria’s wake

Posted: Updated:
PUERTO RICO -

Rescue efforts are continuing in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

According to authorities, at least six people in Puerto Rico alone have died in connection with the storm.

The death toll is expected to rise as officials move into the devastated region.

Meanwhile, the entire island is still without power after the hurricane knocked out an already weakened electrical grid.

In the area of Fajardo, there is flooding, damaged boats and uprooted and downed trees.

San Juan's Marin International Airport is expected to open today since shutting down earlier this week, but the airport will have limited services and no air conditioning.

The airport was flooded and damaged during the storm.

American Airlines says it will partially resume flights to the island, delivering supplies and workers.

President Donald Trump says FEMA and emergency responders are helping both Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands recover.

Hurricane Maria is approaching the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas.

Maria remains a Category 3 hurricane.
