Officials: Cash donations to valid groups best for Puerto Rico

BRIDGEPORT -

With Puerto Rico's infrastructure crippled by Hurricane Maria, officials say cash donations may be best from people looking to help.

The deputy director of the Puerto Rican Federal Affairs Administration says the island is still in search-and-rescue mode and hasn't determined exactly what supplies it will need. It also lacks much of the infrastructure that would receive them. The island has plenty of water, he says, but it will likely need help with construction equipment to rebuild.

Other island officials say they hope to have cellphone towers repaired by the end of the week -- but electricity will still be an issue.

Bridgeport Councilwoman Jeannette Herron says cash donations should only be made to valid organizations.

"Don't just go on a GoFundMe account, because we don't know if it's going to go to the right people there," she says.

More than 30,000 Puerto Ricans live in the Park City. Community members hosted a fundraiser planning meeting Friday night at Sazon Y Mambo on Main Street.

Mayor Joe Ganim also hosted a roundtable talk on relief efforts.
