Police: Suspect in shooting that hurt 2 officers arrested after standoff

NEW HAVEN -

A man suspected of shooting two New Haven police officers and his wife was shot by authorities and taken into custody after barricading himself inside a home, police say.

The incident began around 10 a.m. when police say a 51-year-old woman was critically wounded after being shot by her estranged husband, 51-year-old John Monroe, of New Haven, at a home on Elm Street.

Authorities say the woman was rushed to the hospital and is in critical condition. When police returned to the home, they say Monroe opened fire – striking officers Eric Pasino and Scott Shumway. Their injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

Around 2 p.m., a SWAT team set off a smoke bomb and entered the Elm Street home. Police say Monroe aimed a gun at SWAT team members and was then shot.

Monroe was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. There was no immediate word on what charges he faces.

State police have taken over the investigation.

Gov. Dannel Malloy released a statement on the situation, saying the incident is a reminder of the dangers law enforcement faces.

"We are also reminded of our moral obligation to work to prevent domestic violence and the many needless tragedies that occur as a result," said the governor. "Our thoughts are with the injured responders, the victim, as well as their families and friends."
