With an October budget deadline nearing, Gov. Dannel Malloy says he will not pass the Republican budget proposal that has already passed through the state's House and Senate.
Gov. Malloy spoke at UConn's Avery Point campus Monday and encouraged students to fight the Republican budget that he says would only hurt them.
"You don't go after all your educational institutions of higher learning to the extent that this budget does," said Gov. Malloy.
State Democrats were also at Norwalk Community College Monday, lashing out against the Republican plan that calls for major cuts to the state's colleges.
State Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff says the GOP budget wants to cut $304 million from UConn and another $90 million from the rest of the state's colleges and universities.
Republicans at the event at Norwalk Community College say while some community colleges may close, NCC will not be affected.
Sen. Duff pushed back against the GOP's promise.
"Nobody can make that guarantee and nobody can say that with a straight face, so I'm really concerned that people who voted for this budget actually might believe that a place like Norwalk Community College might be held harmless when we know that's completely not the case," says Sen. Duff.
Norwalk Community College President Doctor David Levinson says NCC is already looking at a 4 percent cut from the current proposal.
The plan also calls for the elimination of scholarship funds that Democrats say over 600 low-income students from Norwalk and Stamford rely on.
