Harding High School in Bridgeport was closed Tuesday after a plumbing leak flooded part of the building.
Assistant Superintendent John Lischner says the maintenance staff got to the school around 6 a.m. to find a plumbing leak from a toilet on the second floor. He says the leak was due to an issue with an automatic flusher on a toilet.
"Once the water was leaking, it then permeated through the ceiling and down onto the first floor," Lischner says. He says seven rooms were damaged, including six classrooms and one room used for teachers.
The decision to cancel school for the day came around 7 a.m.
School officials say no students were in the building, just maintenance and security staff.
Servpro, an outside cleaning company, was on site working to dry out the waterlogged areas.
Officials say the building is expected to be replaced next year. They say construction is underway on a new Harding High School at Boston Avenue and Bond Street.
Lischner says the school will reopen Wednesday and that classes will resume on a normal schedule.
