Southport church mourns victims of Las Vegas shooting in memorial service

SOUTHPORT -

A church in Fairfield joined others across the country Tuesday in remembering those who died in Las Vegas.

Trinity Episcopal Church in Southport mourned the victims by ringing the church bell 59 times, once for each person killed in the Las Vegas mass shooting.

The digital bells that are normally used were turned off Tuesday and instead one large bell was rung manually.

The church's rector tells News 12 that Episcopal churches all over the nation took part in the bell ringing as a sign of solidarity with the people of Las Vegas.

"We hope they take a minute to pause and remember all those who died in this senseless act of violence and also that the bells, the ringing of the bells, can act as a call to action to do something," says church associate Rob Laughton.

Trinity Episcopal Church has a long history of pushing peace and has taken a stand against gun violence since the Sandy Hook mass shooting.

“Are we going to live a life of peace and justice or are we going to live a life of not caring about our brothers and sisters dying from gun violence,” asks Laughton. “How do we stop gun violence in our society? We all play a part.”

The church has a group that actively works to promote a message of how people can be kinder to one another and listen to each other better in hopes of preventing shootings.
