Cheddar afternoon business update 10/06: US economy, Uber, AIM

NEW YORK -

The United States economy lost about 33,000 jobs last month.

Analysts say hurricanes Irma and Harvey caused businesses to close and people to stay home, but they didn't expect the job losses to be that bad. It will likely be short-term, with high demand for construction workers to help rebuild areas damaged by the storms.

It turns out that Uber's iPhone app had the ability to record users' screens, even when it was only running in the background. A new report says Uber was given access to a highly guarded development tool when putting together its app for the Apple Watch. Third-party developers aren't usually able to access the "entitlement" tool, and Uber would have needed explicit permission to use it. Uber says it is no longer using the program.

Goodbye, AOL Instant Messenger. The service will be discontinued on Dec. 15. A statement from Oath, which combined Verizon's purchases of Yahoo and AOL, says Instant Messenger ignited a cultural shift, but the way we communicate with each other has profoundly changed.
