LITCHFIELD -

Police say they seized about 30 animals from a home in Litchfield this week after a complaint of "deplorable" animal neglect.

Torrington Animal Control received an anonymous complaint Monday about the home at 365 Beach St., police say.

The occupant surrendered two sick dogs and a sick cat to an animal control officer and state troopers, who then searched the home with a warrant and found more than two dozen additional neglected pets, police say.

They included 16 rabbits, four adult cats, three kittens, two dead kittens, and five chickens. State police say they took the animals to local vets, and they're expected to be OK.

Signs of abuse included fleas, hair loss and long toenails, according to Tyler Spence, a state trooper.

The owner declined to answer News 12 Connecticut questions about the animals, screamed at reporters and threatened to call police.

Police say the owner could face animal cruelty charges, but the investigation is ongoing.
