Police: Darien man who ran illegal kennel faces animal cruelty charges

A Darien man is facing animal cruelty charges after police found several dogs in his care in deplorable conditions.
Officials say that a golden retriever died from overheating at Terry's House of Pets. They say 44-year-old Terrence Burns turned himself in Friday after customers started noticing their animals acting differently when they came home from his illegal kennel and day care at his Hoyt Street home.
Police say there were several allegations against Burns, including abuse, unsanitary conditions and neglect.
"The area where the dogs were kept was dark. There was animal excrement and urine all over the place. They were kept in cramped cages," says Darien Police Detective James Palmieri.
Burns posted $25,000 bond and was released. The court says he cannot operate any kennel or care for any more animals.
He's due back in Stamford court on Monday.
