"Marshall," whose titular protagonist was then an NAACP lawyer taking on a 1941 rape case in Greenwich, premiered Friday.
Thurgood Marshall went on to become the first African-American Supreme Court justice.
Westport's Michael Koskoff, himself once a civil rights lawyer, spent nine years working on the script.
"This was the OJ Simpson case of its time," Koskoff says. "It was called, in one headline, 'The Sex Trial of the Century.'"
The case was one of Marshall's earliest trials, but in 1941 he wasn't even allowed to speak in the Bridgeport courtroom.
The movie includes a cameo appearance of Trayvon Martin's parents.
"Marshall" is playing at theaters in Bridgeport, Norwalk, and Stamford.
