A former Fairfield Ludlowe High School hockey player is being recognized for his courageous fight against cancer.
Charlie Capalbo was Ludlowe's goalie until March 2016, when he was diagnosed with cancer. Monday at the Fairfield County Sports Commission Night, he received the Chelsea Cohen Courage Award for athletes who have shown strength in life-changing battles.
After diagnosis, Capalbo went through a series of treatments, all with the community behind him.
"Kids would come in the eights and tens," said Capalbo. "Yeah, it was unbelievable."
Capalbo's mother, Jennifer, says he is in remission but will have to go through more than two years of treatment to keep him in remission.
Capalbo says he is hoping to practice by the end of the month, which would be his first time on the ice since being diagnosed.
