A Beachwood family is thanking a Manchester Township police officer for saving their father after he suffered a heart attack during a hockey game.
Just one week ago, Pat Hannaford, 45, was playing hockey at the Winding River Skating Center when he collapsed from a double blockage-induced heart attack.
It was then that a player on the opposing team, off-duty officer Brian Volk of the Manchester Township Police Department, stepped in to help.
Volk, who has 16 years of lifesaving training, administered CPR when he noticed Hannaford wasn’t breathing.
“Training experience took over,” says Volk.
News 12 New Jersey is told that while Volk was giving chest compressions, he was joined by another EMT on Hannaford’s team and a volunteer firefighter who happened to be in the crowd. Through their efforts and with the help of a defibrillator, Hannaford survived.
Hannaford has since received two stents, and doctors say he should make a full recovery.
Hannaford says he is looking forward to getting back on to the ice and finishing the game against his lifesaving opponent.
