The State Bond Commission approved a controversial expansion project at Silver Sands State Park Wednesday despite bipartisan opposition from Milford lawmakers, its mayor and the community.

The state will now spend almost $10 million to add 200 parking spaces, a lifeguard office and modern bathroom facilities at the rustic beach.

Business owners, neighbors and local politicians blasted the plan Tuesday -- then Gov. Dannel Malloy called them selfish. 

"I think ultimately this is about one community not wanting other people to use the beaches -- the public, state beaches in its community,"  the governor said.

Critics argued that the overhaul will harm local businesses and increase traffic.

Unlike an earlier plan, parking will remain free of cost after the expansion. Officials say they expect the project to be finished by summer 2019. They are promising "minimal" disruptions to beachgoers until then.
