Norwalk police say a woman surrendered Sunday in connection with a September hit-and-run that killed a 65-year-old man.

Police say the crash left Archie Hillard mortally wounded and lying in the street at the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Lowe Street. He later died at the hospital.

Police say they found Darlene Moody, the 51-year-old suspect, two blocks away on the night of the crash. Police say she told them she initially thought she hit a deer.

But it took months to finish the investigation, receive blood test results and allow the medical examiner's office to finish its report.

Moody consented to a blood test on Sept. 15, the night of the incident, and it came back positive for cocaine and found a blood alcohol level just above the legal limit.

Relatives of Moody and Hillard know each other, and members of both families were present at the arraignment Monday.

"If she didn't leave, maybe this could have been different," says Francine Robert, Hillard's sister. "My brother still could have been here if she didn't leave. But she left the scene, and we know her."

Moody faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving and evading police. She was being held on $250,000 bond.
