WATERBURY -

Police investigating a car crash in Waterbury say a 16-year-old girl found dead in the vehicle had been shot.

Police responded to the crash into a utility pole Monday about 10 p.m.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, but police say whether she died as a result of the crash or from the gunshot remains under investigation.

The victim's name was not released.

Police think there were at least two other people in the car with her, but it was not clear if anyone else was hurt.

Police say one person is in custody, but have not announced charges.

The crash briefly knocked out power to residents.
