Hempstead Town Councilman Dennis Dunne Sr. wants to crack down on hookah bars by limiting where new ones can open.
The proposal would block new hookah lounges from being built near homes, community centers or schools. It would also restrict them to industrial areas.
"This legislation will keep harmful tobacco smoke far from our children and residents and is a necessary step to ensure our continued high quality of life," says Dunne.
A public hearing on the plan could happen as soon as next week.
"You got to assume you might get a certain crowd that you don't want," says Jemel Goodridge, a Franklin Square parent. "I know I wouldn't want it by my kid's school."
