A teen is accused of driving while drunk, crashing into a tree and then fleeing the scene while his 14-year-old passenger was left unconscious in the front seat.
Suffolk police say it happened in Holtsville shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday on the Long Island Expressway service road near Exit 62.
Officers say Nichols Criesi, 18, of Holtsville, was intoxicated behind the wheel when he slammed his car into a tree.
He then allegedly fled the crash scene, leaving his 14-year-old female passenger unconscious in the front seat. She suffered a broken femur and bruised lungs as a result of the crash.
Police say they dispatched aviation and K-9 units, and they tracked the suspect down on Lakeside Drive about 45 minutes later, just a few blocks from the crash scene.
Criesi is now facing a slew of charges, including aggravated DWI under Leandra's Law, endangering the welfare of a child, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license.
He was also ordered to stay away from his injured passenger for a year.
The suspect's Facebook account includes some disturbing posts, including one that says he's been drinking since age 12 and can't function without alcohol, and another that says he can't stand being sober.
