Gov. Dannel Malloy announced Friday that more than 1,000 rape kits will be fully tested.

Two years ago, hundreds of untested rape kits sat in Connecticut police departments. That number today is down by three-quarters. Malloy says the remaining kits will be fully processed by the spring and that even more partially tested kits will get a deeper analysis. The retesting could take about two years to complete.

Rape kits are now tracked by barcode, and new kits must be tested within two months.

The state crime lab is receiving more than $2.5 million from the federal government.

The head of Bridgeport's Center for Family Justice says the new testing could link one case to other rapes that were never prosecuted.

The state crime lab is also getting money for a new type of testing that's better at finding DNA left behind after a rape.
