Metro-North fares are going up starting Jan. 1.

The fare increase will only be a one percent hike.

Of that one percent hike, the money will go directly to paying for new rail cars.

Rail fares have increased 17 percent over the last five years.

January's fare hike will not be as much of a hit as earlier, much larger increases.

A monthly pass from New Haven to Grand Central Terminal will go up $5 to $500.
