Stratford Town Council to cut $700,000 from education spending

Stratford's Town Council and new mayor came to terms on a new budget with looming school funding cuts Monday night after relocating a meeting from Town Hall across the street to the local high school to accommodate a large crowd.
It was the first meeting for some newly elected councilmembers, too.
Many residents in attendance said they were upset that lawmakers passed a budget that includes around $700,000 in cuts to education. They brought signs, T-shirts and stickers to protest.
The cuts could mean furloughs or layoffs, but some residents support them anyway.
Both the mayor and a representative for the teachers union said they were undertaking ongoing negotiations in the hope of avoiding or at least minimizing layoffs.
