Officials offer safety tips following aftermath of storm

Posted: Updated:
DARIEN -

Over 10 inches of snow fell across parts of western Connecticut, and even though the snow may have stopped falling, the region is now left with the aftermath of the storm.

Shoveling may not be the most enjoyable task, but officials want to make sure you keep a few things in mind as you're digging out.

Officials say to protect your back by pushing the snow rather than lifting it, but if you have to lift it, lift with your legs.

Eversource says don't forget to clear your vents and gas meters too.

Pipes and vents blocked by mounds of snow and thick ice can become a safety hazard and possibly cause a carbon monoxide buildup.

Also, keep an eye on your elderly neighbors.

The National Institutes for Health says more than 1.6 million older Americans go to the emergency room each year for fall-related injuries.

One of the major causes is ice and black ice.

Towns such as Fairfield have programs that provide shoveling services for seniors.
