A fire broke out on Inwood Road in Woodbridge around 5:22 p.m. Friday
When firefighters arrived, the family had escaped to safety out in the street — but 20-foot flames were shooting out of their home.
Crews were still battling them more than two hours later as they dealt with below-freezing conditions that quickly turned their water into ice. Strong winds also fanned the flames and knocked down power lines, leaving a live wire on the ground and slowing down the response as firefighters waited for utility workers to shut off the power.
Several neighboring fire departments and the local DPW aided in the response.
Authorities said the flames were almost extinguished around 8 p.m., but they added that firefighters would still be on the lookout for hot spots.
The house suffered extensive damage. Parts of the structure that had not yet collapsed appeared to be sloping.
At least one firefighter was injured. Authorities said they weren't sure how it happened, but he was hospitalized with a cut on his head.
