Gravesend apartment management fined $400K for illegal sewage dumping

The management company for a sprawling Gravesend apartment complex has been slapped with a historic fine of $400,000.
The New York state Department of Environmental Conservation penalized the Beach Haven Apartment Complex because it says the complex had illegally discharged sewage waste into the Coney Island Creek in 2016.
After over a year of discussions, the two sides settled on what would amount to the largest fine ever levied by the DEC for such an infraction.
The DEC's regional director tells News 12 that by dumping the sewage into the creek instead of a treatment facility, the apartment complex put the general public at risk.
The management office declined to comment on the incident. News 12 is told much of the $400,000 fine will be redirected to support green environmental projects in the community.
News 12 reached out to the management company, which declined to comment on the situation.
