After several years of working to obtain a search warrant, police and animal control in Bridgeport were finally able to rescue several animals Wednesday from poor living conditions.

Officials say 28 dogs, two puppies and one cat were found in a home on Kent Street. They say the animals were found living in hoarding conditions and without food or water. 

Police arrested homeowner Betty Lee on a previous warrant of failure to vaccinate and license the dogs. She is now being charged with 31 counts of animal cruelty - one for each animal.

The animals were taken to a veterinary hospital Tuesday night. Most were released but a few are still there healing. 

"We found fleas, mange, possible bed bugs. There was also reports from our veterinary hospital that there was loss of muscle in some of the dogs, conjunctivitis, long nails, just some neglect from over time," says Sgt. Stacey Lyons.

Lee signed the animals over to the custody of animal control. Once the animals are well again, they will be available for adoption.

News 12 is told Lee will undergo a mental evaluation.
