A nonprofit day care center in Bridgeport received a $50,000 donation for a new heating system.

News 12 first reported that Saint Mark's Daycare on Newfield Avenue had trouble with its heating system. In one of the rooms, a temperature of just 56 degrees was recorded a week ago.

Frankie White, director of the day care, says an anonymous local company saw the story on News 12 and promised to donate a state-of-the-art hydro-air heating system the next day. She says state and federal budget cuts had prevented her center from fixing its old heating system.

Work on the heating system started Thursday morning. White says 100 children will now be allowed in other areas of the building besides the basement, which had been the only spot where the heat was working. She says many parents pulled their children out of the program because of the move.

Community activist Tony Barr and attorney Dennis Bradley first brought the story to the attention of News 12 Connecticut.

The day care director thanked everybody who helped in the solution and said the kindness of strangers has warmed her heart.

"This is one less thing I have to be concerned about," White says. "We're excited that News 12 came out to help us. I don't think this would have happened without it, without the presence."

White says the day care had been forced to turn many students away, but will now be able to resume normal operations within a few weeks.
