Former Bridgeport gang member who pulled gun on state police sentenced

BRIDGEPORT -

A former gang member from Bridgeport who pulled a gun on state police before escaping in a stolen SUV has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Robert Bowens pleaded guilty to one federal count of illegal possession of a firearm.

According to state police, Bowens pulled a 9 mm handgun on troopers before driving away from the scene of a traffic stop in an SUV that had pulled up from behind.

Police say Bowens has a long history of gun-related convictions and is believed to be a former gang leader who wreaked havoc on the city's West Side over a decade ago.

Owens was caught in Bridgeport nearly two weeks later.
