Bridgeport police increase school patrols after Florida shooting

Posted: Updated:
BRIDGEPORT -

Bridgeport police say they have increased patrols at all 41 schools in the city's district in the wake of Wednesday's mass shooting at a Florida high school.

News 12 Connecticut was given access to the Security Operations Center at the Board of Education, where news cameras have been allowed only one other time. The center has live and recorded video feeds of every campus in the city.

Police Chief AJ Perez says officers there are monitoring the extra security he ordered.

"We have over 28,000 students in the city that we look after, so for us it's just about the most important thing that we do," Perez says. "So our security officers and (school resource officers) are on high alert and will remain on high alert for the rest of the year."

Perez says school shootings are not common on urban campuses like in Bridgeport, but they must prepare for any worst-case scenarios.

Suspect Nikolas Cruz, 19, has been charged with 17 counts of murder in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
