Storm damage causes school cancellations in New Canaan

Posted: Updated:
NEW CANAAN -

Trees and power lines that were downed by Wednesday's nor'easter caused New Canaan school cancellations Thursday and will again Friday.

Town roads were clear of snow, but the fallen power lines and tree limbs and branches rendered about 190 roads impassable.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, town officials said Eversource Energy crews were prioritizing making roads safe for emergency vehicles before restoring power.

Toquam Road was a common sight with a tree that fell onto power lines. A section of Weed Street was reopened after it closed due to a small fire from a downed power line.

Officials said 28 percent of the town still didn't have power. Eversource did not provide an estimate for when service would be restored. Residents were asked to prepare for prolonged outages.

All New Canaan public schools will be closed Friday, although officials said they all have power. The town hall and library are being used as warming and charging centers.

Power restoration efforts were underway at the YMCA so residents could use it as a shelter and utilize its showers.

New Canaan Emergency Management Director Mike Handler said it was unfortunate that additional outages hit the town a day after it got fully back online from last week's storm.

"The snow was incredibly wet and heavy, and it's taken down most of our electrical infrastructure," he said.

Metro-North suspended service on the New Canaan branch until further notice.
