The town of Greenwich voted on Monday to ban plastic bags.
The town is following Westport's lead in banning plastic bags from grocery stores and local markets.
A fee for customers to use paper bags was briefly considered, but officials ultimately voted against the idea.
Some customers support the ban, saying cutting down on plastic is good for the environment. But others say this is an inconvenience for businesses and consumers.
The ban will go into effect in six months to give stores time to start ordering alternatives, like reusable or paper bags.
Businesses that do not follow the ban will first get a warning, then fines of $250 and ultimately $500.
