Stamford mayor urges lawmakers to support speed camera bill

STAMFORD -

State lawmakers are considering a proposal to bring unmanned speed cameras to Connecticut.

The bill would establish a pilot program that would allow up to four municipalities to install speed detection cameras at certain intersections and school zones.

Stamford Mayor David Martin testified before the Transportation Committee in Hartford earlier this week, urging lawmakers to support speed enforcement cameras.

He says it's all about safety and pointed to the growing number of pedestrian accidents across the country and in Stamford.

Martin says there were 70 pedestrian accidents last year that resulted in some type of injury. Three of those were deadly.

He also stated there's no perfect solution to the problem, but he wants to explore new tools and technologies to help protect people who live and work in the city.

"This is important for the safety of the citizens of Stamford. We need an affordable way to enforce our laws, and the police do a terrific job, but we need to do much more than that when you look at the statistics that we're facing and the rest of the country," says Martin.
