Bridgeport honors first African-American to sit on City Council

BRIDGEPORT -

A ceremony was held Saturday morning to commemorate the first African-American to sit on the Bridgeport City Council.

Mayor Joe Ganim joined City Council members as Lafayette Street and South Frontage Road was officially redesignated Winifred Timberlake Way.

Council members Jeanette Herron and Denese Taylor Mayor say that Winifred Timberlake blazed a trail for them and others as the first African-American and first woman to sit on the council.

Timberlake died in 2014 at the age of 87.
