State trooper credited with saving man who OD'd on highway

MILFORD -

A Connecticut State Trooper is being recognized Thursday for saving a man who overdosed on I-95 over the weekend.

The incident happened near exit 36 in Milford.

Officials say Trooper Matt Hancock was off-duty on his way home from an Easter celebration with his family when he heard on his radio that there was a man on the ground struggling to breathe and possibly seizing.

Trooper Hancock says he was nearby. He arrived to find several people trying to help the man, whom he determined had overdosed on opiates. He says he used the overdose antidote Narcan.

After administering Narcan, Hancock says the man became coherent about 90 seconds later.

In light of the ongoing opioid crisis, Hancock says all state troopers are currently undergoing Narcan training. He says this is the first time he had to administer it.

"It just happened to be that I had the training and experience fresh in my brain at that point," he says. "It's a good feeling to save someone's life absolutely, but I'm not doing anything that any other state trooper wouldn't have done."

State police say each trooper has a Narcan kit in their assigned cruiser which they can drive off-duty.
