School threat mix-up prompts lockdown at Central HS

Posted: Updated:
BRIDGEPORT -

A threat on Snapchat prompted panic and a lockdown for more than an hour at a Bridgeport school Friday before investigators say they realized it was meant for a school in New Mexico with the same initials.

"I'm going out with a bang," the message warned. "Don't go to school tomorrow."

The photo was circulating on Snapchat around 11 a.m. showing a young man with an assault-style weapon saying he was going to attack "C.H.S.," according to investigators.

"Kids were alarmed at Central High School, and they showed one of the principals," says Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez. "They thought they recognized the person in the picture. It turned out that it was somewhere else."

Police say that message was meant for Clovis High School in New Mexico. Police there arrested a teen Thursday for allegedly sending the threat.

Officials say the Snapchat threat found its way to the Central High School community, where it triggered a lockdown until investigators cleared up the confusion.

Police say the student who circulated the photo was initially detained until they figured out the whole thing was a genuine misunderstanding.
