Longtime Bridgeport resident Dennis Shaw says he will never forget seeing a 77-year-old woman being brutally stabbed in 2011, and not hesitating rush to her aid.
The former Marine said he and another man helped Marjorie Meketa as she was being stomped on and stabbed with a broken wine glass in front of Los Primos grocery store just three days before Christmas.
"She was bleeding from everywhere, she was lifeless, she wasn't moving at all," said Shaw.
Police say the attacker, Marevin Narcise would almost certainly have killed the woman had Shaw not intervened. Narcise was later sentenced to 40 years in a state mental hospital.
Meketa survived, but ended up in a coma for months.
Shaw was honored for his bravery Saturday, adding to other tributes he's received for his actions that day, including the Carnegie Medal for Heroism.
"He leapt in an act of courage to save this woman's life and that is truly uplifting and inspiring," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal.
The Carnegie Commission also awarded Shaw a $5,000 check for his heroism. He says he has been unsuccessful so far in trying to contact Meketa or her family.
