Fundraiser helps police dog with health complications

Posted: Updated:
STAMFORD -

A Stamford police dog is set to retire early due to health complications, and some of his colleagues have set up a fundraiser to help pay for his care.

Officials started to notice something wrong with Loki's right eye around April. They soon realized that he had a full retinal detachment in the right eye and was developing detachment in his left eye.

"He has a little bit of vision left in the left eye right now, but doctors say in a couple months that will probably go out also," says Logan Pavia, of the Stamford Police Department.

Pavia says his family loves the dog and he is taking him in, but with Loki out of the police department at the end of the month, the city stops funding his care.

One of Officer Pavia's colleagues set up a T-shirt fundraiser to help.  Donated money will go toward his medical care and food costs.

Stamford police say K-9s ideally work for 10 years, but Loki is retiring after three. He has been operating solely as a narcotics dog since his vision started going bad.
