Kids charged with threatening moviegoers with cap guns

Posted: Updated:
STAMFORD -

Several Stamford kids caught menacing customers with cap guns at a movie theater Sunday night are facing charges of reckless endangerment and breach of peace.

Police say five juvenile suspects, between the ages of 10 and 16, ran into the Bowtie Majestic 6 cinemas on Summer Street and ordered patrons to "get down."

They allegedly fired the cap guns into the air and fled on foot.

Police say they caught them within 10 minutes.

Their capture could have gone badly, though.

"We actually thought it was an active shooting situation," says Stamford Police Capt. Diedrich Hohn. "God forbid if you hear someone with a gun, you might not see it's a fake gun right away, and something bad could happen."

And the kids were not only at risk of fooling officers.

"If somebody was carrying a concealed-permit weapon, they possibly could have took them down," Hohn says. "They're just playing with their own life."
